Solcana Community Council

January 13, 20253 min read

Solcana is launching Community Council, and we are looking for 6-8 people who are excited about taking community action this year!

What Is the Solcana Community Council?

The purpose of the Solcana Community Council is for a small group of Solcana community members to gather on a routine, bi-monthly basis with two explicit purposes:

  1. To provide assistance to the Solcana leadership team in actions they are taking to bolster equity, accessibility and justice in the fitness space. For example:

Solcana has a goal of providing ongoing Black Strength programming. We are struggling to find grants or partnerships that could help provide support for the program. Staff would approach the council for ideas and support on finding partnerships and/or grants.

The council would also field ideas from the wider community on implementing mission-driven programming at Solcana. Solcana staff receive emails regularly about desires for new and different programming. The Community Council would be responsible for taking these suggestions, determining if community action is possible, and determining if the action fits into the annual goals of the council.

  1. To lead the wider Solcana community in how they can be involved in increasing equity, accessibility, and justice in the fitness space for 2SLGBTQIA+ and other underserved communities.

The Solcana community is asking for more leadership on actions they can take to support Solcana's mission of inclusion and equity in fitness. The council would find opportunities for Solcana members to participate in volunteer opportunities, community action, partnerships, etc.

Who is on the council?

The council is made up of 6-8 committed individuals who agree to meet 2x per month for a 1-year term. Each year people can apply to be on the council and the group will be selected through a community vote.

The council then chooses positions to help manage the council itself: these positions are at the discretion of the council but are encouraged to be egalitarian in nature.

You may be a good fit for the council if any of the following are true about you:

  • Have good follow through and are detail oriented

  • Take a thoughtful, strategic approach to justice-oriented actions

  • Are solutions focused

  • Like to be creative and work with others

Council Members Are:

  • Current members, coaches and/or staff

  • Agreeing to a term of 1 year

  • Participating voluntarily

Community Council actions will still be subject to the oversight of the Solcana leadership team to ensure that actions align with Solcana’s mission, follow our branding guidelines, and meet expectations around language. The leadership team has the right to veto actions or suggestions that work against the mission or don’t meet up to quality standards.

Example of A Council Meeting

The agenda for council meetings will be dictated by the council members, but here is a sample of what a council meeting might entail:

  • Reviewing any proposals made by Solcana community

  • Review questions from Solcana leadership and offer suggestions and support

  • Create a project plan for an upcoming community action

  • Discuss an upcoming event that Solcana members may want to attend

  • Plan a partnership with a like-minded non-profit organization

  • Follow up and debrief previous actions and projects

  • Schedule outreach to the Solcana community

Applications to be considered for the council are due by January 31st.
